A tapered hardwood drift pin, hand-turned and polished to prevent snags. Tied into a knot, it prevents jamming: just slip it out and the knot will untie, no matter how tight it was pulled. Include it in the clove hitch you tie on a post when pulling in a splice so it will come undone. Use it as a temporary toggle to join two loops.
Being wooden, it won’t mar the bench like metal pins will. Being dense, it won’t crush inside a knot. Being beautiful, it will make you appear so as well.
